What to expect at your first chiropractic visit

By Pamer Chiropractic Health Center, Akron, Ohio

Chiropractor's hands on a patient's back during an adjustment

At your first chiropractic visit, expect a conversation about your concern, a history, an exam, and X-rays when the exam shows they are needed, followed by a clear explanation of what was found and what to do about it. Nothing starts until you understand the plan and agree to it. At Pamer Chiropractic Health Center in Akron, the whole visit is built around transparency, so you never feel processed. Patients from Green, North Canton, Uniontown, Cuyahoga Falls, Barberton and other communities across Summit, Stark and Medina counties are welcome at the Akron office.

Before you arrive

Bring a photo ID, your insurance card, a list of medications, and any prior imaging or records. Wear comfortable clothing you can move in. If you have paperwork questions, call ahead: (330) 724-9331.

A referral is usually not needed to see a chiropractor, but some insurance plans have their own rules, so the office checks your plan when you book.

The consultation and history

The visit starts with questions: when did it start, what makes it better or worse, what have you tried, and what does your day look like. Dr. Pamer asks a lot of questions on purpose; the history does most of the diagnostic work.

Bring questions of your own. The practice's approach includes open, honest conversations, and no question is too small when it is about your body.

The exam

The exam covers how you move, where it hurts, and how your nerves and muscles respond: motion checks, strength, sensation, and reflexes. It is interactive, and you will know what each part is for.

X-rays may be taken when the exam shows they are needed, not as a routine for every patient. If you have prior imaging, it is genuinely useful, so bring it.

The plan, in plain language

Before any treatment, Dr. Pamer explains what he found, what he recommends, why, and what it costs. Care is never started before you agree to it, and the plan is reviewed at every visit.

New patients can start with a free consultation to talk with Dr. Pamer about their concern. Exams, X-rays and treatment are separate services. Call to ask whether the consultation offer applies to you, since some insurance plans, including government programs, have rules about free services.

What happens after the first visit

You leave with a clear understanding of the next step: a plan, home guidance, and a way to reach the office with questions. Follow-up visits are shorter, and progress is measured visit to visit.

The full step-by-step is on the new patients page.

What this means for you

A first chiropractic visit should feel like a consultation, not a conveyor belt: history, exam, explanation, and a plan you approve. If a visit does not feel that way, it is the wrong visit.

When to see a chiropractor or doctor

Book when pain is interfering with daily life or not settling. Call 911 for red-flag symptoms: loss of bladder or bowel control, sudden weakness, numbness in the groin or saddle area, or severe pain after a major injury.

Common questions

Will I be adjusted on the first visit?

Usually not immediately. The first visit is for evaluation and discussion; if treatment is appropriate, it is explained and approved first.

How long does the first visit take?

Plan for longer than a typical follow-up, often close to an hour, since the history and exam take time.

What should I wear?

Comfortable clothing that lets Dr. Pamer see and test how you move. You may be asked to remove shoes and outer layers.

Will I need X-rays?

Only when the exam shows they add useful information. You will be told why before any imaging is taken.

What if I am nervous about adjustments?

That is exactly what to tell Dr. Pamer. Gentle and low-force options are available, and nothing happens without your comfort.

How do I book?

Request an Appointment online or call (330) 724-9331. The office checks your insurance benefits when you book.
